Independence Day
02:50
|
|||
Independence Day is here
but it’s in December, not in July this year
And there’s a fireworks display
but it’s not the good kind so I should get away
I don’t want the kids to know
tell them it’s for work, and I have to go with all my gear
And yeah, I’ll be there Christmas Eve
but as soon as dinner’s done ...and dessert..I’ll leave
Because you’re colder than South Minnesota
and you’re farther away than the sun
How’d we get here coming where we were coming from?
Nobody told us when we were young
that when we got this old we’d still be dumb
I’ll pick up my vinyl soon
but as it is right now I just haven’t got the room
And if you need help with the tile
I could come by Thursday, and maybe stay awhile...
Because I’m colder than South Minnesota
and you’re farther away than the sun
How’d we get here coming where we were coming from?
I’m older than Handel's Messiah
and you’re hotter than heat from the sun
How’d we get here coming where we were coming from?

Ball and Tether
02:04
|
|||
We used to be so tied together
like a ball onto a tether
like every feather on a bird
like every letter in a word
Now we’ve lost that lovin' feeling©
no more dancing on the ceiling©
but let’s not throw in that white towel
maybe we’ll get it back somehow
I don’t know where you are
but I’m coming for you
I do not know where you are
but I’m coming for you (yeah)
In the Big Book of Relationships
we’re a footnote stuck in an ellipsis parenthetical
(but I’m glad we met-ical)
And when they clear the rubble from this mess
they’ll find my bones inside a sweater vest
with a note that says “I tried—it didn’t matter, I
still died.”
I don’t know where you are
but I’m coming for you
I do not know where you are
but I’m coming for you (yeah)

I know something isn’t right
something isn’t happening in here tonight
Say so if you want a fight
but something isn’t happening in here tonight
Come back, let’s take another tack
nothing is impossible when you’re on fire
It’s not perfect that I want
all I want is tenderness and true desire
Oh everything’s the dead of winter
when you’re both made of snow
But no one in the northern hemisphere
could melt me like you though
Some scars heal themselves I’ve heard
but I’ve never seen it with my own two eyes
Time wounds both losers and stars
Everyone is even under finite skies
Oh everything we do is harder
when we’re both made of stone
But no one in the western hemisphere
could crush me like you though

4. |

I’ve been a shell of myself for a while
negative energy, deep in denial
all my day-to-days take all of my strength
all of my nights you get held at arm's length
And you say it’ll all work out
but I’m leaving me nothing but doubt
I’ll never understand me now
We miscommunicate half of the time
things are okay then they turn on a dime
I’m not one to tender any advice
but I measure my words once
and make them cut twice
And you say it’ll all work out
but I'm leaving me nothing but doubt
I’ll never understand me now
I’ll never understand what’s inside of this man
I’ll never understand me now
And we piece us together with spare jigsaw parts
and it’s close, but it isn’t quite right
I think we both feel with our heads not our hearts
and it starts to get harder
each time getting easy’s in sight
but I know it’s alright, ‘cause you say it’s alright
I’ve been a shell of myself for a while
head full of yesterday, heart like a child
I don’t think you’ll stay, you don’t think I’ll leave
I don’t know which one of us to believe
And you say it’ll all work out
but you’re leaving me nothing but doubt
I’ll never understand you now
I’ll never understand what you saw in this man
I’ll never understand you now

Idiot Kid
03:37
|
|||
If you want to see something
take a look at a list of mistakes that I’ve made
like I’ve never learned nothing
like the time that I’ve had’s all been pissed away
And I can see in the sunset
that the road from here on is more down than up
and I’m not given to hoping
but I hope that I’ve given you half enough
I’ve thought about leaving, but how would I go?
What’s left to believe in? I don’t know...
I’m an idiot kid
I’m just an idiot kid I guess
I’m an idiot kid
I’m just an idiot kid at best
To be totally honest
I don’t think I can teach you a goddamn thing
but I’m here if you need me
and I’ll try not to be too embarrassing
But if you can’t revere me, at least let’s don’t fight
So long as you’re near me, that’s alright
I’m an idiot kid
I’m just an idiot kid I guess
I’m an idiot kid
I’m just an idiot kid at best

She’s getting ready to go
to the opposite end of the country
This town’s a little too slow
not like the opposite end of the country
There they do it up right,
drink mickeys all night
She’s packing all of her stuff
for the opposite end of the country
Finding work shouldn’t be too tough
at the opposite end of the country
They love her out there,
she’s a breath of fresh air
Sometimes you’ve got to
carve your own sweet path
but with no direction you fall on your sweet—
I’ve heard some horrible things
about the opposite end of the country
They’ve got syndicate rings
at the opposite end of the country
There they shoot you with knives
and give each other high fives
You’ve got to figure out yourself what’s best
but with no direction you just make a mess
And now she wants to come back
from the opposite end of the country
They’re just a bunch of poseurs and hacks
at the opposite end of the country
She’s nuts in the head, but we’re making her bed

No Water in the Lake
01:32
|
|||
I feel strongly that I love you
and I can’t shake this feeling
my heart is reel-to-reeling
and my dogs are gone astray
By some force of Mother Nature
I the-opposite-of-hate ya
and I want to conversate ya
for a while anyway
There is no sun without you
no water in the lake
no afterlife, no God for heaven’s sake
All I ask is that you stand me
and I-want-to-hold-your-hand me
but if you reprimand me
no sweat—I’ll go away

The Takeaway
04:50
|
|||
Tonight we find we’re on the same side
We sit here and drink the kitchen sink dry
Drink to remember ended good times
Drink to forget that time is unkind
What is the takeaway from this?
Decades of tilting at windmills
What if we’re following our bliss
not to Nirvana just to landfills?
Tonight we’re fine on borrowed timelines
we sit here and drink the Milky Way dry
There’s no going back to start the same ride
and no stuff could ever fill us inside
What is the takeaway from this?
Decades of tilting at windmills
What if we’re following our bliss
not to Nirvana just to landfills?
What is the takeaway from this?
Decades of pissing in the wind
What if we’re following our bliss
not to Valhalla just a dead end?
